How to enjoy Christmas and still save our planet

Christmas is just around the corner, and while you may or may not be able to see your loved ones in person, you probably want to show them you’re thinking of them.

We don’t want to be a party-pooper, but the festive period is not the most environmentally-friendly. But you can help. And what better gift to give than playing your part in protecting our beautiful planet?

In just over three days of festivities, the average Brit will create the same level of carbon emissions as they would on a flight to LA.

Here’s how you can make a difference…

Make your own decorations – or buy them second hand!

If you fancy a colour scheme change, why not see if someone in your family will swap baubles and tinsel with you?

Or even better, why not create your own decorations? You can make your own wreath from natural foliage, making it completely sustainable. Gathered have an amazing tutorial here – check it out!

For tree hangings – orange peel make amazing decorations and they smell fantastic.

If all else fails, head to your local charity shop and find some pre-loved goodies.

Think carefully about your Christmas tree

Every year, nearly 7 million Christmas trees end up in landfill. Heading out to choose your tree each year is such an exciting moment. But what if you could do this AND make sure you were being environmentally-friendly? Well you can. You can rent a Christmas tree locally and each tree gets replanted at the end of the festive season. Loads of places offer this – a quick Google search will sort you out.

If you would prefer to buy one, make sure you choose one with an FSC Certification to confirm that it has been sourced sustainably. After Christmas,

you can place some of the pine needles into a small cloth bag to make your room smell like a Christmas tree, so the magic doesn’t have to end.

Another option – turn your houseplant into a Christmas tree.

Send eco-friendly Christmas cards

Let your loved ones know you’re thinking of them with a card made from 100% recycled paper.

We have an amazing selection for you to choose from. Our favourite is this Christmas Quacker one for £2.50.

Our cards are recyclable, but are designed to create lasting memories and are perfect for popping in a square picture frame. They are also plastic free, of course!

Avoid food waste

Try to cook what is required and no more. However, we know this is easier said than done. We all have a ‘head chef’ who thinks an extra bag of potatoes is required. So how about making bubble and squeak with your leftovers? Love Food Hate Waste has an amazing recipe here.

If you’re not a fan – why not give the leftovers to your neighbours or friends? With Covid-19 set to stick around, you may be helping out somebody who is isolating (but leave it on their doorstep, of course!)

Give sustainable gifts

If you want to give your friends or family a little something to open, why not choose something sustainable.

We are really proud of our products which are all recyclable, plastic-free, vegan or reusable.

We have an amazing Christmas hamper, which really has it all. Included are, all five of our Festive Bath Bombs, 'Cause your Gold Shower Gel, Cherry Christmas Solid Shampoo Bar, Holly Jolly Whipped Soap, Tart Apple Jelly Soap and a Festive Cherry Jelly Soap.

Wrap your gifts with fabric

On average, Brits use around 227,000 miles of wrapping paper. In fact, Defra estimates that enough wrapping paper is used each year to gift wrap the island of Guernsey.

Imagine saving the hassle of heading to the busy supermarkets just for another roll of paper – which will only end up covering your lounge in unwanted glitter anyway. You can ditch paper altogether and wrap presents this year in fabric. It’s a fabulous way to live a bit greener – and we have these amazing fabric wraps.

If you don’t want to use fabric, switch to brown eco-friendly paper instead. This can help to minimise the high levels of waste produced at this time of year – and it looks fancy too.

Have a very Merry Christmas, from our family to yours!
